Puth served equally Mendes' opener for the Illuminate World Bout, which saw the now 26-year-former playing to sold-out crowds beyond the U.S. — many of which overlapped with the places he'll exist visiting next year. Though he wasn't necessarily a stranger to a sold-out room, equally he managed to sell out many dates on his own tours and has played several Jingle Ball shows, Puth was all the same blown abroad by the reaction on Mendes' bout.

"I'k ever going out on phase wondering if people are going to sing forth with me," Puth admits to Billboard. "[Shawn] has songs that manifestly everybody knows. All of his fans there, die-hard fans, will sing every lyric dorsum, but seeing that so many times and having some of his fans sing every lyric of my vocal dorsum — and being then excited to see me — it injected this newfound confidence in performing … I was moving differently on stage."

As two of the most in-demand male pop stars in the final couple of years, both Mendes and Puth had enough to do prior to their shows every night on the Illuminate Tour, which meant they didn't go a whole lot of downtime bated from pre- and mail-evidence bout omnibus hangs. But when they did go a run a risk to spend time together, of class information technology was music-related. "Nosotros vibed out with John Mayer," Puth recalls.

Other than their mutual honey for Mayer, they actually differ quite in scrap in their tastes, which ended up being a fun introduction for one another. "I was showing him Kirk Franklin, Gospel music, Baptist choirs, and he was showing me — he was like, 'Do you know this song, "I'll Be Watching You" by P. Diddy?' I'm like, 'Yeah, I know that song, Shawn, who was born in 1998.' [Laughs.] Just he was really schooling me on stuff besides. I hadn't heard some of these rock records. He has great taste in music."

Their jam sessions concluded up turning into impromptu writing sessions, during which Puth excitedly says they "started something actually cool" together. Unfortunately the timing wasn't correct, as their hectic tour schedules got in the way — but judging by what Puth took away from his time on the road with Mendes, a Charlie/Shawn collaboration isn't totally out of the question for the future.

"He'll hate me for proverb this, but I simply assumed he had other people writing well-nigh of his material," Puth says. "But when he saturday downwardly and only started singing melodies, kind of like I did, I was similar, 'Wow! That'south really impressive.' Don't gauge a volume by its cover."

Puth is even so working on his sophomore anthology, Voicenotes, which is prepare to make it next twelvemonth.
